If you have spent any time in Canada, you have probably encountered Shoppers Drug Mart, the pharmacy and convenience chain found on every corner in malls to the streets, and basically everywhere across the country. It is the go-to place for any quick errands to run since they carry everything from vitamins to snacks to gift cards, and opens most days of the year.
However, have you heard of Healthy Planet?
Unlike Shoppers Drug Mart’s nationwide presence, Healthy Planet is a Canadian family-owned company with physical stores primarily based in Ontario. Their first location opened in Downtown Toronto during the mid to late 1990s, and they’ve been quietly building a loyal following ever since without the massive corporate expansion most chains pursue.
The Markham West Location: More Than Just Vitamins
Healthy Planet Markham West opened in December 2025 at 8555 Woodbine Ave b100, Markham, ON L3R 4X9. I waited a few months before visiting to let the initial rush settle and see what this location actually offers beyond the opening hype.
This is not your typical cramped vitamin shop. The Markham West location is really spacious, with everything from a separate section for beauty products to health supplements, produce, and groceries, frozen foods, and other specialty items not found in your average grocery store. If you are looking for specific products not found in your local grocery store, then this is definitely worth checking out.
One strategic advantage? The location can be found right beside LA Fitness, making it perfect for post-workout grocery runs right before heading home. It is that convenient ecosystem setup that actually makes sense for people’s routines rather than requiring separate trips across town.
The Shopping Experience: Space Without the Chaos
Here’s what genuinely surprised me about Healthy Planet Markham West: there’s foot traffic, but nothing like the overwhelming crowds you encounter at typical GTA grocery stores. If you’re someone who dreads fighting through packed aisles and competing for deals during peak hours, this offers a noticeably calmer shopping experience where you can actually browse without stress.
The store isn’t trying to compete directly with massive supermarket chains. Instead, they’ve carved out a middle ground – not as limited as small health food shops, but not as overwhelming as sprawling grocery stores. The selection feels intentional rather than trying to stock everything possible.
The produce section is there, but it is limited, like in most regular grocery stores. It is there if you need to pick something up that you forgot to buy, but that is about it. But the beauty products and supplements are well-stocked, which shows that this is where they are focusing their attention and expertise.
The Specialty Item Advantage
What sets Healthy Planet apart is their specialty item selection – products that many conventional grocery stores simply don’t carry. Whether you’re looking for specific dietary supplements, natural beauty products, organic options, or health-conscious alternatives, they stock items that require visiting multiple stores to find elsewhere.
For health-conscious shoppers tired of hunting across different locations for specialty products, having them consolidated in one spacious, less-crowded environment genuinely adds value.
The Mini Café Addition
The location includes a small seating area with a counter where you can order food, drinks, and baked goods. It’s not expansive – just several seating spots, but it serves the purpose of offering quick bites or beverages if you need a break during shopping or want something immediately after your workout next door.
Worth the Visit?
Whether you are a healthy cautious person or simply a curious person looking for alternatives to conventional grocery stores, a visit to Healthy Planet Markham West is in order, at least once, if you are in the Ontario area. Not only do they offer a variety of specialty foods, a peaceful shopping environment, a roomy store, and a strategic location near LA Fitness, but they are a valuable resource in a gap between conventional grocery stores and small health food stores.
At the very least, you will find products you didn’t even know existed, and at best, you will find a new home for all of your specialty food needs without the chaos of a conventional grocery store.
